Module 08 / 9

3D

While not a full 3D application, After Effects provides robust 2.5D capabilities with 3D layers, cameras, and lights. Perfect for integrating 2D elements in 3D space.

Key Concepts

3D Layers

  • Toggle 3D switch on any layer
  • Z-position for depth placement
  • X/Y/Z rotation for 3D orientation

Cameras

  • One-node camera — orbits around point of interest
  • Two-node camera — fixed position, adjustable aim
  • Depth of Field for cinematic focus effects

Camera Settings

  • Focal Length — wide (15mm) to telephoto (200mm)
  • Aperture — controls depth of field intensity
  • Focus Distance — what's in sharp focus

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use null objects as camera parents for smoother camera moves
  • Enable Draft 3D for faster viewport performance
  • Separate XYZ position dimensions for independent animation
